ACL Tear

ACL Tear (Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury)

By Dr. Kanta Prasad (MBBS, MS – Orthopaedics)

What Is an ACL Tear?

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the major ligaments that stabilize the knee joint. An ACL tear occurs when this ligament is overstretched or torn, leading to knee instability, pain, and difficulty with sports or daily activities.

ACL injuries are common in athletes and active individuals, especially in sports involving sudden stopping, pivoting, or jumping.

Causes & Risk Factors

ACL tears usually occur due to:

  • Sudden twisting or pivoting movements

  • Rapid change in direction while running

  • Landing awkwardly from a jump

  • Direct blow to the knee (sports or accidents)

  • Sports such as football, cricket, basketball, kabaddi, and skiing

    • Symptoms of ACL Tear

      Common symptoms include:

      • A popping sound at the time of injury

      • Immediate pain and swelling of the knee

      • Feeling of knee instability or “giving way”

      • Difficulty walking or continuing activity

      • Reduced range of knee motion

Diagnosis

Dr. Kanta Prasad evaluates ACL injuries through:

  • Detailed clinical examination and special knee tests

  • X-rays to rule out fractures

  • MRI scan to confirm ACL tear and associated injuries (meniscus, cartilage)

2. Surgical Treatment

Recommended for:

  • Complete ACL tears

  • Young and active individuals

  • Athletes wanting to return to sports

  • Recurrent knee instability

Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction

  • Minimally invasive keyhole surgery

  • Torn ACL is reconstructed using tendon grafts

  • Strong, stable knee with excellent long-term results

Recovery & Rehabilitation

  • Walking with support in early phase

  • Structured physiotherapy program is essential

  • Return to daily activities in 6–8 weeks

  • Return to sports in 6–9 months

  • High success rate with proper rehabilitation

When to Consult an Orthopedic Specialist
